New Editor-in-Chief of Protein Science to take helm

BETHESDA, M.D. (Mon., Jan. 1, 2007) -- The Protein Society announces that Brian W. Matthews, Ph.D., will be the new Editor-in-Chief of its academic publication Protein Science, effective January 1, 2007. Protein Science, published by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press, is the premier international journal for advancements in research on protein molecules.

“Dr. Matthews was appointed as our new Editor-in-Chief because of his extensive experience, sound judgment, and integrity,” states Jeffery W. Kelly, Ph.D., President of The Protein Society. “He is an exceptional scientist, and we look forward to his insight and leadership to make our journal even better.”

Matthews succeeds Mark Hermodson, Ph.D., who is retiring after nearly a decade. Hermodson will assist with the transition by serving as an Associate Editor for the next year, a post that Matthews has occupied for the past seven years.

“[I]t is an honor to be invited to serve as Editor of Protein Science,” Matthews writes in an Editorial in the January, 2007 issue of Protein Science. “I particularly want to thank my predecessor, Mark Hermodson, and his staff for their outstanding service during the past decade. Mark deserves great credit for all he has accomplished.”

As a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator and member of the Institute of Molecular Biology at the University of Oregon, Matthews leads a research team whose efforts focus on protein folding, stability, and activity, as well as protein-protein and protein-DNA interactions. He has been a faculty member at the University of Oregon since 1969 and also is an Adjunct Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Oregon Health & Science University, Portland. Matthews’ undergraduate and graduate instruction was at the University of Adelaide in Australia. He received post-doctoral training from the Medical Research Council in Cambridge, England, and the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He was elected in 1986 to the National Academy of Sciences and in 1989 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He served as President of The Protein Society from 1995-1997.

Matthews is currently listed by ISI’s Web of Knowledge in the top one-half of one percent of scientists in the world whose work is most often cited in the peer-reviewed scientific literature. He was recently appointed to the National Advisory General Medical Sciences Council, which performs peer-review of research grant applications and offers advice on policy and program development for the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS).
