The development of an infant, from conception to the postnatal period, involves the dynamic coordination of numerous biological factors in the mother, father, and fetus. The use of rapid and sensitive methods to probe these factors has made a remarkable impact on reproductive and neonatal medicine.

Scherl describes the sculpture as a 21st century biogenetic interpretation of Jacob's dream. Jacob dreamed of a ladder, four messengers, and God telling him that his descendants will flourish. Biblical scholars say that the ladder in Jacob's dream had a bend in its path, much like the curving, helical shape of the DNA molecule.
